What Are The Signs Of An Addict?

An alcoholic or a drug addict is an individual whose body or mind is dependent on a substance and who deals with life through this use. It is usually someone who is at the mercy of getting his next “fix”. People with drug and alcohol dependencies do not set out to destroy themselves and everything around them. Sadly, these are the disastrous effects of the vicious cycle of addiction. For many, drugs and alcohol offer an illusionary escape from life's realities by averting emotional and/or physical pain. In fact, using and abusing drugs and alcohol create more problems.

Over a period of time, a person’s ability to choose not to take alcohol or drugs may become compromised, the person rationalises the need to use consistently and will do almost anything to get their “fix”. They now display symptoms of drugs and alcohol addiction. They become difficult to communicate with, are withdrawn and begin to exhibit abnormal behaviour.

Once a person gets stuck into a behavioural pattern of not dealing with life on life’s terms, the substance abuse gets worse as they use more drugs and alcohol to achieve the same effects. Eventually the thing that made them feel good starts to cause problems. These problems include uncomfortable comedowns and physical withdrawals, problems at work, expenses for continued use, damaged relationships, broken promises and depression.

What Has To Be Done To Break The Cycle?

The person needs to get to the point so they can stop the vicious cycle and no longer needs to use drugs and/or alcohol to function. Stopping usually needs help and/or medical attention. There would also need to be some sort of help needed in learning to create a happier life to get to the point of not using in the future. If the individual were simply to stop without this improvement occurring then they would normally go straight back to their using or acquire another addiction. If the individual has other outlets for their addiction, such as food, sex, gambling, eating and co-dependent relationships, relapse is sure to follow if these areas are not identified and treated.

How And Where To Get Help

A treatment center brings hope to those who suffer from the effects of alcohol and drug addiction. Rehabilitation center can give back an addict their life. Those who find themselves in the deathly grips of addiction can be freed with the help from a drug treatment center. A rehabilitation center is setup to guide the addict through the process of recovery.

An addiction can manifest itself physically, mentally and emotionally with the individual. The physical part tackles the physical malady of this disease. Addicts put themselves through an enormous amount of bodily harm. Most drugs destroy at least one major organ. Alcohol has a lasting effect on the liver. Ecstasy slowly eats the brain. Cocaine weakens the heart. These are just a few of the addictive drugs and their main physical side effect.

The mental part is usually assessed on site by a psychiatrist at the rehabilitation center. The psychiatrist will help the addicted patient through the mental damage that drugs and alcohol have done. By rebuilding the thought process of the individual the addict is able to make clear-cut decisions, rather than clouded inebriated ones.

A rehabilitation center also has highly trained drug and alcohol counselors. These counselors along with the patient can begin to repair the emotional damage done by drugs. Through one on one, family and group counseling, the patient is able to deal with the damage. Most addicts cover up certain emotions and the treatment center offers them the opportunity to get back in touch with these emotions. This is where the true healing begins.
